For my last post in January, let’s talk about my favorite Hair and Skin purchases of 2018 (so far).
First, let’s talk hair. As a child, my sister was blessed with perfect, thick, golden curls and I was blessed with… fine, wavy, calyx hair. Fast forward years of straightening and scrunching later, I finally learned to love and embrace my natural hair. However, I’ve had my fair share of issues and continue to take care of it so that I don’t experience more. Having fine hair can sometimes be annoying when you see endless #hairgoals on Pinterest and Instagram of girls who just came from a hair apt with thick, long beautiful locks. I know I know… their hair doesn’t always look like that but hey… A girl can dream right?
About 2 years ago, I started medication for my anxiety that in the end caused so much damage to my hair that it gave me MORE anxiety. As I’m sure most of you know, medications come with side effects and side effects can vary from person to person. I was on a medication that had an unofficial side effect of hair loss but that was usually only experienced by people above the age of 50. So imagine, a 19 year old girl losing a big chunk of her hair. It was honestly devastating to me.
Ok now I know that might sound a bit dramatic and I know beauty comes from the inside and not your appearance, but hear me out here!! I wasn’t even 20 and I started to lose my hair. I’m talking clumps. Every time I’d take a shower, the floor would be covered in hair which, for someone with already fine hair is a huge deal. Over the span of a month I had about 3 major bald spots on my head and did all I could to hide them. I researched shampoos, extensions, anything that would make it better and ultimately decided to switch to a new medication. Since my hair has gone back to normal, I make it a priority to take good care of it. Which brings me to… my favorite shampoo and conditioner I’ve ever used. Function of Beauty.
Two of my best friends introduced me to this line after they found it on Instagram and ordered some to try. What I loved the most at first was how pretty it was. I love anything colorful and they are all about color!! When my package came in the mail, I was instantly shocked at the branding. It was BEAUTIFUL.
A company that appreciates the details and puts in the effort to make someone’s day when their order comes in the mail really goes a long way with me. Each order comes with a function of _____ (your name) and a list of what makes up your shampoo. When ordering, you take a hair quiz and actual chemists create an individual magical potion for your hair type. Y’all. It actually works. Since using, my hair has grown significantly (which usually takes forever for me) and I can no longer see any past signs of my hair loss. You pick the color, scent, and size and they’ll do the rest! They are also cruelty free, sulfate and paraben free and have free shipping. I definitely recommend ordering some for yourself!!
Next, let’s talk about Skin. Skin is so important. In a way, it’s kind of like a first impression. A lot of people, (including myself) feel less confident when experiencing skin issues than when they have clear, radiant skin. There’s just something about a clear face that makes you feel like you can take on the world!! My skin is something I was blessed with as a child. I don’t usually experience a ton of acne unless it’s hormonal. However, it is super fair, super sensitive and super dry. Like really dry. Especially in the winter. Which is ya know, now. It wasn’t until I turned 21 that I really started to see the importance of taking care of my skin.
My entire life, (especially in the past 4 years) people have thought I’m much younger than I am. Strangers will ask me if I’m 12-14 years old because I look so young without make up. And let me tell you… it’s been a HUGE insecurity of mine. Each time I explain “No sir… I’m actually in my 20’s” they immediately have a look of shock come across their face, feel bad and say “Well you’ll love it when you’re older!!” Yeah I get that. And I get that they aren’t trying to upset me. But right now I’m 21 and I don’t want to be called a “tween”. Ugh. Barf. No offense to tweens. Seriously. Those were just NOT my good years.
Although this is something that I hate, I think it’s important to take care of my skin now, so that, like these annoying strangers said, I will love it when I’m older. My friend Leah is a consultant for a company called Rodan + Fields and after introducing me to their products, my life was forever changed. This company is currently the number one skin company in the game and if you’ve used any of their products… you know why. Because of my dry, sensitive skin, I opted for Soothe. It helps with little bumps under the skin from irritations and helps to calm and well… soothe the skin.
What I like so much about R+F is that each bundle comes numbered so that you never mess up the steps. It’s also a set morning and night routine for me. I take my make up off at night, take a bath, brush my teeth, then wash my face. In the morning, I wake up, brush my teeth, and wash my face. Done. I’ve already accomplished something for the day. In the mornings, there is a 4th added step which is something I’ve never cared to do but is SO necessary for protecting your skin and that is sunscreen. Especially because I am so fair, this is HUGE in keeping youthful, undamaged, Sun cancer free skin!! (Especially you my Florida girls!)
Since starting to use R+F, I’ve felt the difference in my skin, mostly because of the Consistency. For me, consistent skin is key. Since it is winter, I recently added another step to my routine to keep from lots of peeling in the cold months and that is the Active Hydration Serum. I’ve had it only for a few days and it already has made all the difference.
These are just two of my favorite Beauty products I’m using right now and hope that you’ll try them for yourself! I was never really into beauty stuff until recently but since finding such great products that ACTUALLY work and make a difference, I just couldn’t help but share! While some are on the pricier side, I believe them to be so so worth it! Who doesn’t want to feel their best, beautiful self!?
What are some of your favorite beauty products??
